-Save this Church!-
Join us on a mission to restore The Church at Freetown, a charming 175-year-old church in Marathon, NY. Once rumored to be an Underground Railroad stop, this historic gem needs some love. Closed for five years and in dire need of repairs, we would like to invite you be a part of our revival journey!
When Brian and Rochelle Guernsey (co-founder of Cloud 9 Enrichment Program) reached out to Pastor Lane two years ago to discuss reviving the church, he joyously welcomed the couple as church trustees, and they eagerly embraced the opportunity to restore this beloved place for the community.
With Pastor Ken Lane's blessing, they’ve made modest repairs, added drainage, and gave the church a new roof. However, a surprise tax exemption challenge has them scrambling for funds to complete the restoration.
We're seeking community support to finish the job and open the church’s doors for various activities, especially for local homeschoolers.
Our wish list includes sheetrock, joint compound, interior and exterior doors, flooring, doors, windows, recessing and wall-mounted light fixtures, electrical wiring, and more.
We are grateful for any opportunity our community can give to lend a hand, including even the most modest of contributions!
A little white church, a lot of local history
The Church at Freetown is believed to have historical ties to the Underground Railroad, an informal network of safehouses and routes used by escaped slaves seeking freedom in the 19th century. Local oral tradition and discovered hiding places suggest that the church may have been one of these safe havens, where escaped slaves found refuge on their journey to freedom.
The trustees have a deeply personal connection to this historic place of worship- it was here that Brian and Rochelle celebrated their wedding. The church's sacred ambiance and historical significance created a perfect setting for their special day, marking the beginning of their shared journey.
With roots in the local community, the owners' families have a long history with the church, spanning generations. Each lovingly restored beam and floorboard will honor the past while nurturing a brighter future for this cherished church.

Restoring Grace: Our Vision for Tomorrow
With dedication and community support, we envision the Church at Freetown as a hub of education and inspiration. Here, children will explore their passions in hands-on shop classes and dive deep into art, embracing intricate processes and abundant supplies. A butterfly sanctuary and chicken coop will teach them about nature's wonders, while a library and study hall provide a quiet space for academic growth. The woodworking shop will nurture craftsmanship, and agricultural-focused classes will connect them to the land. Evenings will come alive with night classes, and a nature school will instill a love for the environment.
We would love to hear from you!
